The Florida Dance Education Organization is pleased to announce that Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida will host Beyond the Test: Mentoring for Artistic Engagement for the third consecutive year. The event will take place on February 9, 10, 11, 2018. The Beyond the Test Participant Registration Form is due by November 2, 2017.
The Beyond The Test: Mentoring for Artistic Engagement initiative is a two- day symposium specifically benefiting secondary dance students and their teachers. This unparalleled event will enable students to participate in the Florida Dance Performance Assessment, the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Honors Concert, a mock audition for college programs, and master classes with an impressive lineup of professional teaching artists and university professors. Just click on the links at the top of the page to choose from the various levels of participation pending your students’ needs, grade level, and the type of dance program offered in your middle school, high school, dance studio or community program. It is not necessary to be a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts to participate in the Florida Dance Performance Assessment, the mock college audition or the master classes. However, the teacher or sponsor must be an FDEO member. Dance studios and community arts programs will need to make sure that they separate their middle school dancers from their high school dancers for the FDPA due to the standards for the different levels.
Why Participate in Beyond the Test?
Beyond the Test: Mentoring for Artistic Engagement is designed to enhance students’ access to a well-balanced curriculum. It supports holistic learning and the student as a whole-person. It provides students with the opportunity to practice performance, critical thinking, problem solving, and reflective skills that are transferable to other contexts. This is not a competition. Trophies will not be handed out. Each teacher will be provided a written evaluation and analysis of their students’ performance. Following a review of the written evaluation, adjudicators, students, and teachers from each school program will engage in a reflective discussion to address areas of mastery as well as areas that are in need of improvement in each school program. The process generates qualitative and quantitative data that participants can use to facilitate improvement in teaching and learning.
