Beyond the Test: Mentoring for Artistic Engagement

March 1&2, 2014
Hosted by Howard W. Blake High School Magnet
1701 North Boulevard, Tampa, FL. 33607

For the very first time in history FDEO will present a 2-day symposium specifically benefiting secondary dance students and their teachers. This unprecedented event will enable students to participate in the Florida Dance Performance Assessment, The National Honors Society For Dance Arts Honors Concert, participate in a mock audition for college programs, and take master classes with an impressive line up of Professional Teaching Artists and University Professors. Click on the links below to choose from the various levels of participation pending your students’ needs, grade level, and type of dance program offered in your middle or high school. It is not necessary to be member of the National Honor Society to participate in the Florida Dance Performance Assessment, the mock college audition or the master classes.

The Florida Dance Education Organization is pleased to announce the formation of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts in the state of Florida.  As a state affiliate of the National Dance Education Organization, we will be granting charters to Florida chapters started in middle school, high school, and private dance programs, and NDEO will be granting charters to institutions of higher education.  The primary mission of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) is to promote and honor outstanding dance achievement in middle high school, and collegiate level students (11 years of age and older).  Further, NHSDA hopes to encourage well-rounded dance artists to become leaders in their communities after high school graduation.

How is NHSDA Awarded?

Student membership in the National Honor Society of Dance Arts is awarded based on points earned for meritorious work in dance that meet the honor society’s general guidelines and, when appropriate, based on dance class grade point average.  In addition, the prospective member’s dedication to collaborative teamwork, motivation, and participation in the many aspects of dance is a factor in determination of eligibility.  Additionally, all junior and senior high school NHSDA members are eligible for nomination to receive the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Achievement Award.

Student members will be required to pay membership dues of $8 and be verified to meet eligibility requirements by their chapter sponsor.  All student members will receive a certificate of membership, be able to wear a NHSDA honor cord and gold pin for graduation, and participate in special events sponsored by the Florida Dance Education Organization. Members may also purchase and wear the NHSDA Florida t-shirt and be recognized in all their school publications for their membership in the organization.

In order to start a chapter in your school you must have a sponsor who is a member of the Florida Dance Education Organization, which includes membership to the National Dance Education Organization.  If you would like NHSDA information, click on the link above.  For further questions, contact Jennifer at fdeo.jennifer.simmers@gmail.com
